The Instructor Led Only course takes place in a classroom and range environment and is objective based. Course topics include gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. This course is a requirement for those who wish to obtain an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor certificate.

This is a beginning course for pistol shooters.  Once completed, the student will fully understand firearm safety, proper shooting techniques, proper maintenance and storage of their firearm.  Students will receive an NRA Certificate of Completion upon successfully completing the course.



Course Outline:

This course will cover the fundamentals of firearms safety, marksmanship and California Laws on safe storage, transportation and other firearms laws, including:

Responsible firearms ownership and applications of the handgun
Safe use and handling of firearms
Locking devices and techniques for firearms to prevent unauthorized gun access
Potential dangers (penetration, ricochet, misidentification, accidental discharges, etc.)
Components and operation of modern pistols and revolvers
Types, components, and purposes of modern ammunition
Applicable laws relating to the possession, transportation, and storage of firearms
Fundamentals of basic marksmanship

Required Equipment:

Firearm in one of the following calibers:  .22, .380, 9mm, 10mm, .40, .45
200 rounds of approved ammunition*
Please wear long pants with pockets, closed toe shoes (no flip flops or sandals), and a crew neck (T-shirt) or button-up shirt (no low-cut necklines)
Eye Protection
Active noise reduction hearing protection preferred


*non-toxic, non-jacketed FRANGIBLE ammunition may be required
Steel Jacket or reloaded ammo is not allowed
Ammunition is available for purchase from Sacramento Gun Club
